The Artist’s Statement

For the past 18 years I have been exploring a visual language consisting of steel and shadows as an art medium. My interest in this art form evolved from a combination of loving to draw, and a frustration with the shadows that my more traditional steel wall reliefs created.

The works in this show were all produced in 1988, and represent a transitional phase in the process by which the steel elements in my sculpture in effect tore themselves away from the wall, leaving their shadows behind. Each piece in this show represents another step in my effort to develop a vocabulary for this mixed medium.
