Judging
the Interpreting Landscape show was a wonderful
experience for me. There were literally as many visions of the
landscape as there are definitions of the landscape itself,
ranging from energetic urban settings and peaceful rural scenes
to dramatic windswept beaches and quiet gardens. How we respond
to and then recreate these different landscapes can be just
as varied.
There
was an incredibly diverse range of artistic visions represented
as can be seen from the many different media and styles used
to portray the landscape. Styles ran the gamut from traditional
to the not so traditional, and the art forms included traditional
painting and drawing mediums, fabric, collage, prints, and photography
of all sorts-including black and white, digital, infrared and
color. Distilling these diverse landscape views into a show
came down to determining what makes up a winning piece of art:
technical proficiency in terms of design and perspective, a
general command and proficiency in the artists use of
their chosen medium, a well-balanced composition, good use of
values and color, and fresh ideas. Combined with all of this,
the top award winners took all this one step further and also
elicited a strong emotional response from me.
The
Fulton Street Gallery is to be commended on the high number
of quality entries that were truly deserving of an award. My
one regret is that I couldnt give out more awards. Congratulations
to all who entered.

Shows
like this are possible only because of the many volunteers who
have given their time, energy, and insight. I would like to
thank you all for making this possible, as one person can not
do it all.
