Colleen Skiff
Director / Curator “Interior: Artist as Decorator”

To think of artist as decorator is their space will be interesting but ever changing as the artist is seldom separated from their materials, taking pieces from one item to create another and is never satisfied with the end product. As consumers we tend to fill our homes with Kmart and Wal-Mart products and mass-produced furniture — all with little personal identity. We seldom recycle or fix items, as it is cheaper to just buy new. Perhaps it is because we are trained to think that way or to not think at all as recycling has been presented as boring. Not so, the artist … not only do they fill their homes with very personal selections, but also ones that almost always mirror their personalities por the personas they wish to project to the outside world, usually items made by other artists and sometimes even themselves.

Artists have notebooks filled with wonderful creations that seldom get made. The purpose of this show was twofold — to get some of those items into 3-D and to get them seen in order to heighten the awareness of the wonderful marriage of original use of materials and fine craftsmanship. Add freshness and whimsy with some practicality, give it some of your own personality and invite others into it. Perhaps they too will think differently about their personal and public environment. And wouldn’t it be nice to save our natural resources at the same time?
