Juror’s Statement

Diversity is one of the hallmarks of the twelve hundred plus photographic images I reviewed for this exhibition. It is heartening to see the variety of approaches taken by the photographers and the respectable level of quality that has resulted from their efforts. Like a roadmap of contemporary photography, the work points the way to new directions and also reexamines long-familiar viewpoints.

Many of the selected photographs are firmly grounded in a profound sense of time and place. There are images about the places where we live and the ways we arrange ourselves in them. Other images reflect the makerís commitment to defining the elusive and mysterious reality that surrounds them. And there are those that embark on a course where a sense of self-discovery and an acute awareness of the world intertwine.  There was much good work which could not be included in this exhibition and many difficult choices had to be made. Consequently, I placed an emphasis on each photographerís images as a whole.

In selecting this assembly of works it was important for me to be convinced of a consistent, well-defined vision.  I very much enjoyed the opportunity to participate in this event and thank all those who shared their work with me. I also commend Susan Myers and the volunteers at the Fulton Street Gallery for all their fine efforts in organizing this exhibition. Events, such as this, will continue to enlighten and nurture the learning process for us all.
