Located in historic downtown Troy, New York, Fulton Street Gallery is an independent non-profit art gallery
whose mission is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art in the Capital Region through the coordination of exhibitions of regional and international artists work.

Partnerships

Founded in 1997, we have enjoyed working in partnership with the community and its resources which include the many colleges and universities of this area and the local arts councils. Support comes through individual contributions, corporate under writing, grants and members fees. The guidelines set by the New York Council for the Arts are used for our annual international juried exhibitions. All proceeds from shows are used for juror salaries and operating costs.

This is an all volunteer run gallery. Members and non-members donate time and services to the gallery through guest curating, hanging of the exhibitions, graphic art work, web page design and maintenance, grant writing, and the sharing of information and talents — including just keeping the doors open.

Community

The organization serves a diverse population. Because our exhibitions cover a wide variety of topics and have focused on women, the homeless, body images and health issues, computers, urban and rural society, we appeal to a wide audience. The area in which the Gallery is located has been considered by local and federal governments as impoverished and in need of economic development. The Gallery fits in with the revitalization of the area, serving an emerging community development need. The Gallery is in what is rapidly becoming the city’s arts and antiques district. We have brought attention to the city both regionally and internationally with our innovative exhibitions and events.

The programs and services at the Gallery benefit all socio-economic groups. We provide workshops on everything from bookkeeping to framing artwork. Artists share models and other resources, and the Gallery provides art equipment for artist use. We also take well below normal commissions on the sale of art — 30%.

Artists in Schools — Workshops & Residencies
Art in Public Spaces

One of our most important missions is to provide education to the schools and to the community about its artists and their art. Understanding of art processes and the doing of art stimulate creativity, personal growth, collaboration and community involvement. We have begun to conduct artist interviews, which are on video. To further this program, we would like to train full time artists to build connections between the Gallery and the schools and put both professional artist and student work in public spaces.

Exhibitions

Each year we offer a variety of exhibitions — two international, two regional (open or themed) and solo and small group. We serve about 200 artists annually. Most exhibitions are cataloged, hard copy in the past, CD-ROM is the present format being used. These are available to exhibition artists at no cost. Any restrictions on eligibility in participating in any exhibition would be posted in a prospectus of individual shows. Generally, all exhibitions are open to artists over eighteen years of age who reside anywhere in the world and are posted on this site.

Membership

Membership is open to all at: $25 for student and senior, $35 for artists, $50 for family and $100 for businesses. Members receive a 10% discount on purchases and workshops and a 25% commission is taken on their work that is sold at the gallery. Members’ works are also eligible to show in the Airport Departure Gallery, if selected by their director. There is an exhibition of members work every two years. And, members receive newsletters, either hard copy or on-line and e-mails of upcoming events.

Message from the director

It is our members efforts which help make this gallery work for you and for them. There are countless opportunities for growth from being involved in your artistic community; from artistic, social, educational, business, civic, empathic and or spiritual. The making of art and being within a community of artists helps us gain a greater understanding of our motivations as artists and a sense of perspective about our work. Whatever your needs are, it is our hope that what Fulton Street Gallery has to offer, either through exhibiting opportunities or in viewing past exhibitions, that you become inspired to do more, to give more, to be more.
